Emotional Freedom Technique (Eft)
What is the Emotional Freedom Technique?
EFT uses a combination of psychological techniques and acupressure. It is one of the newly emerging energy therapies. Although forms of energy therapy have been around for a long time, techniques such as EFT are relatively new, having been developed since the 1990’s.
EFT works by discharging the energy patterns in the acupuncture meridians that are present when we think about an emotional or traumatic incident. The patterns of energy in the meridians of the body are directly affected by our thoughts and emotions. When we disrupt the energy pattern associated with a thought or emotion it is impossible for that thought or emotion to be maintained. At the same time as disrupting the existing pattern of the thought we implant a new pattern of thought with its associated positive emotions.
What does EFT therapy involve?
You can use EFT yourself after going on a short course where you can learn the basic techniques. You can then explore using the techniques for dealing with relatively minor emotional or psychological problems, either on yourself or with friends and relatives. However, if you want to use EFT to deal with more difficult issues you would be advised to see a qualified EFT practitioner.
The actual process of EFT is very gentle. It simply involves tapping with the fingers on acupuncture points at the same time as saying a statement related to your problem, followed by a positive affirmation that negates your negative thoughts and feelings. For example:
“Even though I was treated really badly by my ex-boyfriend, I still love and accept myself exactly as I am”.
The EFT practitioner will repeat this process with you several times focussing on any related feeling and thoughts that come to the surface during the session.
What conditions does EFT help?
EFT is helpful for most emotional or psychological problems including:
- Phobias
- Addictions
- Mild depression
- Anxiety
- Panic attacks
- Low self esteem
Is EFT safe?
It is safe to use EFT on yourself for all minor emotional and psychological problems. For more serious conditions you should consult a qualified EFT practitioner and continue any conventional medical treatment you are receiving.
